Earlier this year, healthcare reform was signed into law, and now we will discuss what's next. Panelists will consider the possibilities for state-based single-payer reforms and the role that the netroots and labor can contribute in making them a reality. We'll also discuss overlooked healthcare reform priorities such as patient safety reforms and protection of the public health system. Panelists will discuss how to fill the many holes in the recent law and keep the pressure on our legislators for reform. (NOTE: This title and description are tentative and will change.)

Despite early expectations or fears, one of the two Republicans in President Obama's cabinet and head of an often-obscure agency has become one of the administration's rock stars. Ray LaHood has elevated public transportation, biking and walking to prominence in American transportation policy just as the Recovery Act of 2009 pumped billions into new projects. How has a former Republican Congressman pushed some of Obama's most progressive policy successes, and what's needed to cement a new direction in federal policy that deeply affects where we live and how we get around?

This panel will detail the push by anti-government organizations and the president’s debt commission to solve the “deficit problem” by slashing Social Security and other critical federal programs. It will describe the real factors driving the federal deficit, including tax cuts for the rich, two wars, rising health care expenditures and the Great Recession. The panel will debunk the most basic falsehood of the debt commission: that Social Security contributes to the deficit. Panelists will expose the hypocrisy of addressing the deficit without considering deep cuts to the bloated military budget or increased taxes on corporations and the wealthiest Americans. Panelists also will describe a newly formed coalition working to blunt attacks on Social Security and other domestic programs and how activists can get involved online and offline.

Thu, 07/22/2010 - 4:30pmBrasilia 1

On November 7, 2009, the Stupak Amendment passed the U.S. House of Representatives—and seemed to take the entire pro-choice movement by surprise. Yet Rep. Bart Stupak had publicly signaled his intentions as early as June 25. What happened during those next five months? And how did this very public and entirely predictable attempt to restrict reproductive rights take an entire movement by surprise? Panelists will offer their perspectives on the 2009 fight over abortion in health care reform and discuss strategies for a grassroots-driven, cross-movement strategy moving forward. This session will also discuss the broader implications for movement politics and issue organizing, examining how these lessons can be applied to other areas in progressive politics.

Fri, 07/23/2010 - 10:30amBrasilia 1

Building on the Netroots Nation 2009 panel on LGBT organizing, this panel will expand the conversation to discuss the state of the equality movement in 2010 and what progress can be made before the 2012 elections and beyond. Panelists will discuss the Obama Administration's record on LGBT rights, the federal Prop 8 trial being led by Ted Olson and David Boies, state-by-state efforts to win marriage equality, the potential repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the federal court ruling that DOMA is unconstitutional, and the lack of movement in Congress on a trans-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

More than a third of workers age 35 and under cannot pay the bills; seven in 10 do not have enough saved to cover two months of living expenses; and a third are forced to live at home with their parents. How can young workers avoid becoming the nation's new underclass? Hear from panelists who are taking charge of their economic future by forming coalitions and networking with unions to reshape the traditional structure of workplace-based unions and reach young people where they're at, while building on the power of collective bargaining. Find out how you can take part in a grassroots mobilization that's shaking up the traditional face of the labor movement.

Fri, 07/23/2010 - 4:30pmBrasilia 1

This panel will address the needs, successes and obstacles to having greater participation of people of color in the blogosphere. Using communities like Black Kos and Native American Netroots as a beginning point for the discussion, we'll cover topics such as color blindness versus representation and how to get historically underrepresented groups and their views heard. The discussion will focus on how to organize outreach between the larger blogosphere and blogs that are specific to communities of color, and how to form stronger connections to ongoing organizing efforts and activism in communities of color.

The Obama administration faced a daunting foreign policy agenda when it came to office. Two wars, a sagging economy and bruised American prestige overseas translated into diminished global influence. Nevertheless, the Administration undertook a daunting foreign policy agenda intended to clean-up the mess the Bush administration left behind. This agenda did not lack ambition, as the President’s commitment to seek a world free of nuclear weapons was made clear. Nor was it going to be easy. As the ongoing struggles to move past the Bush-era mindset on terrorism toward a new strategy based on resilience and fortitude showed, the Administration’s agenda has not been not free of obstacles or controversies. A key question is whether President Obama will be remembered for his foreign policy accomplishments that make the front page—such as his approach to Iran—or those which don’t always make the headlines, such as the effort to rebalance America’s instruments of power so that its economic, diplomatic and development instruments are on par with military power. This panel, comprised of leading foreign policy experts and commentators will assess the emerging Obama ‘doctrine,’ analyzing its major successes, its persistent challenges and what the future has in store.

Launched in the spring of 2004, Air America is now off the air. This panel of hosts, producers, managers and investors will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the network's accomplishments, failures and how it changed the progressive media landscape.

Sat, 07/24/2010 - 4:00pmBrasilia 1

The Obama presidential campaign and its successor, Organizing for America (OFA), have learned through experience how to pair robust and open online tools with a network of organizers working in communities across the country. The OFA team has made online to offline organizing a priority—and has won behind-the-scenes victories and learned lessons in moving online clicks to boots on the ground. In this panel, the technology, new media and deputy field directors will engage the room in a conversation about those experiences and their potential implications for activists and organizations throughout the progressive movement—and solicit ideas on how to better fuse online to offline organizing moving forward.
