Among the priorities of the Obama administration are passing clean energy and workers’ rights legislation. Representatives from the Blue Green Alliance — a national partnership of labor unions and environmental organizations — will discuss how this unique partnership is working to expand the number and quality of jobs in the clean energy economy. Join us for this panel, which will include union members already working in the clean energy economy, to discuss building an online effort to create good jobs while reducing global warming and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

Rob Witherell

Rob Witherell works in the organizing department for the United Steelworkers at its headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA. He has 19 years of experience in union organizing, contract negotiations, strategic campaigns, research, politics and student organizing. Recently, Rob led the USW organizing and negotiations efforts with Gamesa, a wind turbine manufacturer in Fairless Hills and Ebensburg, PA.

Michael Oko

Michael Oko is the Federal Media Director at the Natural Resources Defense Council, where he oversees the organization's media relations in Washington D.C. Previously, Michael was a Senior Communication Officer at the American Red Cross where he focused on international policy, humanitarian disasters and public health issues. Before that, Michael spent close to 10 years in New York City working in a variety of capacities in advertising, film and video production, and strategic communications.

Rachel Martin

Rachel Martin is a Regional Representative for the Sierra Club in Philadelphia, PA. She began her work with the Sierra Club, the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization, in Pittsburgh in April 2004, working to increase local public engagement in environmental issues. Sierra Club’s work in Pennsylvania is focused primarily on promoting green jobs, developing the clean energy economy, and curbing global warming. Sierra Club is a founding partner of the Blue Green Alliance.

Dave Johnson

Dave Johnson is a 12-year member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) and the first and only director of the Laborers’ Eastern Region Organizing Fund (LEROF). Mr. Johnson is responsible for coordinating and overseeing organizing activity for the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, New Jersey and Delaware. Under his leadership, thousands have joined LIUNA by way of his organizing campaigns, including laborers who are working in the Newark Weatherization Program, a joint project between LIUNA Local 55 and the City of Newark to recruit and train workers to make homes more energy efficient.

Michael Whitney

Michael Whitney is an online organizer with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Michael manages the online campaign for the Employee Free Choice Act as part of SEIU's Change that Works program. He got his start in online politics on Howard Dean's presidential campaign as one of the co-founders of Generation Dean, a web-based youth outreach organization. Michael is a contributor to techPresident.com, the Huffington Post, and his overly active Twitter feed.

Michael Williams

Michael Williams is the Legislative Representative for the Blue Green Alliance. Michael previously worked as Legislative Assistant for Congressman Lloyd Doggett, handling environmental, energy, transportation and other issues. Michael helped the Congressman craft one of the most progressive climate change bills in the 110th Congress, the Climate MATTERS Act. He previously worked for the National Wildlife Federation, where he helped start their environmental education advocacy campaign, was involved in NWF’s campaign to address global warming, the Water Resource Development Act, public lands and energy legislation.
