Lone Star Candidates: The Class of '08
The great state of Texas has many excellent progressive candidates seeking to help turn Texas "blue" in 2008. From Netroots-powered U.S. Senate candidate Rick Noriega to down-ballot candidates for the Texas Legislature, the class of 2008 represents many of the best and brightest Democrats Texas has to offer.
Vince Leibowitz is the editor and publisher of Capitol Annex, one of Texas' most prominent progressive political blogs. A former award-winning "main-stream media" journalist, Vince is active in Democratic Party politics and is the winner of the 2002 Nancy Monson Award from the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas and the Texas Press Association. Vince presently serves as Chair of the Texas Progressive Alliance, the nation's largest formalized coalition of state-level political bloggers and Netroots activists.
Joe Jaworski combines a family tradition of public service with faith in the power of individuals to make a difference in their communities. Jaworski served three terms on the Galveston City Council, where he insisted on financial accountability to hold the line on new taxes while safeguarding vital services. In 2005, Jaworski helped lead the team that faced Hurricane Rita and won praise for his role in that region’s emergency preparation and response. Born in Houston, Jaworski earned his bachelor’s from Davidson and his law degree from UT. Jaworski and his wife have two children and live in Galveston.
Sherrie Matula is the Democratic candidate for Texas House District 129. As a science education consultant, she works in low-performing schools to design and implement strategies to dramatically bring up standardized test scores. She served two terms on the Clear Creek ISD School Board, is a past board member of the Texas State Teachers Association, and has lobbied for education in the Texas Legislature since 1978. Matula is running to regain control of the skyrocketing cost of living in Texas, ensure sufficient funding of public schools, preserve our environment while protecting jobs and restore ethics and integrity in Austin.
Michael Skelly is a candidate for Congress (TX-07). Michael built a successful Houston-based wind energy company from the ground up. By the end of this year, that company, now a multi-billion dollar operation, will meet the energy needs of nearly a million American homes. Michael's family came to this country from Ireland aboard the S.S. America. After graduating from public schools, Michael went to the University of Notre Dame. After college, Michael joined the Peace Corps. After meeting his wife, Anne, he earned an MBA from Harvard. In 1999, he moved his family to Texas where they currently reside.
Rick Noriega is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas. Rick served as deputy garrison commander of the KMTC training facility in Kabul, Afghanistan after 9/11. Upon his return from Afghanistan, Rick was tapped by Mayor Bill White as Incident Commander of Houston's Hurricane Katrina relief efforts at the George R. Brown Convention Center (GRB). At the center, Rick coordinated medical, employment, travel, housing and food services for more than 2,000 evacuees living on-site. Since 1999, Rick has served in the Texas House of Representatives.
