Over the past few cycles, we’ve seen the importance of innovative field programs in successful campaigns. The most effective campaigns have understood the increasing synchronicity of digital and field as an ever-increasing percentage of the electorate engages meaningfully online. The best campaigns have utilized lessons learned from Social Network Theory, the analysis of how people interact in the context of real life social networks, and applied them with incredible results. This session will begin with an overview of applicable tenets of Social Network Theory and will highlight innovative campaigns of the last cycle. Special attention will be paid to a recruitment and confirmation system developed by McAuliffe Fairfax County Regional Field Director Colin Hicks that allowed his team to shatter recruitment goals and post an incredible 2% flake rate during GOTV.

Dennis Hughes
Dennis Hughes is a Staff Representative for AFSCME Council 40 in Wisconsin and has been fighting Scott Walker’s attack on labor since the Spring 2011 protests in Madison. Dennis served as field organizer on the Walker recall, Regional Field Director and deputy field director of Michigan’s 2012 Prop 2 campaign for a constitutional right to collective bargaining, OFA’s statewide immigration reform organizer in Wisconsin, and, most recently, Take Back America political organizer for AFSCME covering Eastern Wisconsin. Dennis is a proud graduate of Marquette Law School, the University of Notre Dame, and Ilya Sheyman’s campaign for Congress. He is also an alum and board member of the New Leaders Council – Chicago. Dennis recently got engaged to the love of his life, sorry ladies (and gentlemen).
Monique Teal
Monique first joined DFA after two years as the National Field Director for the US Student Association (USSA). While with USSA, she worked to hold state and national leaders accountable on key progressive issues, such as education, healthcare, immigration reform and labor rights by mobilizing college & university campuses. For the 2010 election, she organized voter registration, education and get-out-the-vote efforts on over 100 campuses resulting in over 70,000 registered voters. Once the 111th Congressional session wrapped, Monique moved to DFA as a National Field Organizer and Campaign Academy Organizer. Throughout 2011 she trained, recruited and developed activists, organizers and candidates in grassroots tactics and strategy. In 2012, Monique moved to MN-08 to direct CREDO SuperPAC’s campaign to defeat the worst tea-party members of Congress. After a successful campaign, Monique happily returned to DFA to continue recruiting, training and developing the progressive bench in all 50 states.
