Since April 2021, a well-funded and highly-organized national campaign, disguised as “grassroots parent groups,” has energized the right wing media machine and prompted twenty-six states to propose and/or pass legislation that bans public schools from addressing discriminatory practices and limits how teachers can discuss racism or sexism in public school classrooms. Republican lawmakers and right wing advocacy groups are intent on silencing educators from teaching lessons that address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion– lessons that are critical to the academic and life outcomes of all children, white and nonwhite. We will focus on who is behind this right wing campaign, what their tactics and goals are, and how educators and activists can fight back.
