Working in coalition is one of the best ways to build power and engage effectively in the public policy process. However, nonprofits need to be aware of the rules governing organizations with different tax-exempt statuses and how they impact coalition efforts. This workshop will explain how different types of nonprofits can work together to maximize their advocacy through lobbying, voter education, outreach and more—all while staying in compliance with the law. Participants will walk away with a solid understanding of how 501(c)(3)s, 501(c)(4)s, unions and political organizations can work together.
Susan Finkle-Sourlis serves as Senior Counsel for Affiliate Organizations with Bolder Advocacy. In her role, she provides legal guidance on advocacy and political programs to nonprofit organizations. Susan also advises AFJ and AFJ Action Campaign on legal issues. Prior to joining Alliance for Justice, Susan served as CFO / In-house Counsel for America Votes. Prior to that, she was the Compliance Manager at EMILY’s List. She has more than a decade of experience with nonprofit advocacy and campaign finance regulations at the federal and state level.
Susan attended Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, and participated in the Law and Public Policy certificate program. She is a graduate of Ohio University. Susan loves to travel, hike, read, and listen to podcasts.
Quyen is Legal Director for the Bolder Advocacy program at Alliance for Justice and is based in Southern California. She was in private practice before joining AFJ with a focus on advising social enterprises and benefit corporations, a legal status mix between nonprofit and for-profit. Quyen is one of the founding hosts on BA’s Rules of the Game podcast.
Outside of work, Quyen is always looking for her next Habitat for Humanity build. When she is not hammering or mixing mortar, she bikes and practices yoga to maintain her sanity and compensate for her love of ice cream.
